Privacy notice

This is a translation for your convenience; if the two differ, the Dutch version applies.

In short: your location stays on your phone. Only when you ask for a walking route or join a tour does anything go to a server, and then for as short a time as possible.

Version of October 2026.

Who we are

Pearls of is published by Van Maastricht Onderwijs & ICT. Questions about privacy: info@parelsvan.nl.

The app

  • Your location. The app uses your phone's GPS to tell whether you are standing at a pearl. That happens on the phone itself; your location is not sent to us.
  • Finds, settings and your language choice are kept in your browser's storage, on your phone. If you clear it, they are gone.
  • The camera and compass are only used in the moment, for the camera view and Then and now. No image goes to a server and nothing is kept.
  • Show me the way. For the walking route, your current location and that of the pearl go to a route planner based on OpenStreetMap. The compass points the way without anything leaving your phone.
  • Address search. With Walk to your hotel via pearls, only your search text goes to a search service, together with a frame around the city to search within.
  • The voice that reads out the directions is your phone's own. If your phone only has an online voice, the text of the direction goes to the maker of your browser.

Tours

If you join a tour, your team name, your points, your answers and the language of your app go to our game server, and, for as long as the app is open, your location every fifteen seconds, so that the game leader can see the teams on the map. Other teams only see that location if the game leader turns it on. Positions are not stored on disk. A tour and everything that belongs to it, including a subscription to notifications, disappears three days after the last activity. It is best not to use real names as a team name.

For a tour for a school or company, that school or company is responsible for the processing, and on request we sign a data processing agreement.

Who else receives anything

  • The map tiles come from OpenFreeMap (via Cloudflare), the aerial photo from PDOK (Kadaster, the Dutch land registry). They see your IP address and which part of the map you are looking at.
  • Notifications go through your phone's push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla).
  • Our hosting is with Hostinger, in the EU.
